SAVE THE DATE! Australia and New Zealand Legal Ethics Colloquium 7:
Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia – 20 and 21 July 2023

Posted on February 9, 2023 by IAOLE IAOLE

After a COVID-19 induced hiatus, ANZLEC returns! ANZLEC 7 will be
hosted by the University of Southern Queensland, and will be held at
the Picnic Point Function Centre in Toowoomba on Thursday and Friday,
20 and 21 July 2023.

The theme of ANZLEC 7 is Lawyers as Activists: It addresses lawyers
who direct their practice by reference to a political, environmental
or some other moral cause. There are many expressions of the activist
lawyer – those whose work is dedicated to providing legal assistance
to marginalised or in-need or who work within legal practices that are
politically-partisan, union-focused, business-oriented or faith-based.
All, in some respects, challenge the traditional pillar of moral
non-accountability as an understanding of the fundamental ethical
position of the legal profession and consider, to different extent,
the importance of law to advancing their particular understandings of
justice.

ANZLEC 7 will also celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Legal Ethics, the
international journal that has been a favoured quality publishing
outlet for Australian and New Zealand scholars in the field.

Keynote speakers are:
Professor Hilary Sommerlad, University of Leeds
Professor Julian Webb, University of Melbourne
Professor Lisa Webley, University of Birmingham

Presentations of 20-30 minutes are invited from academics, judges,
practising lawyers on the activist lawyer, but contributions on any
aspect of legal ethics will be considered. Those that address lawyers
as activists may be supportive or critical of the practice.
Contributions will be welcomed from individuals or panels.
Contributors are encouraged after ANZLEC7 to submit completed papers
for publication in Legal Ethics, subject to the usual refereeing
requirements.

Abstracts are to be submitted by 9 June 2023. The ANZLEC 7 website
will soon be available: this will provide for registration for the
colloquium and the dinner, for the submission of abstracts, and
information on accommodation in Toowoomba and travel.
