The IAOLE Deborah Rhode Prize

The Deborah Rhode Prize for Early Career Scholars was established by the International Association of Legal Ethics in 2015, and named after the Association’s first President, Professor Deborah L. Rhode of Stanford Law School. Deborah Rhode was a generous supporter of the Association. She had a vision for the importance of an International Association of Legal Ethics in fostering legal ethics scholarship around the world and a commitment to mentoring and fostering the work of junior scholars in this field. It is therefore very appropriate that the Association honours Deborah Rhode with the awarding of this named prize. Sadly, this is the first Rhode prize since Deborah’s untimely passing in January last year. Being able to award a prize in her name is one of many ways to keep her legacy alive and honour a legal ethics ethics trailblazer. 

The prize is available for a paper on any topic in the field of legal ethics. Papers must have been published or accepted for publication as an article in a journal or chapter in an edited book since the last International Legal Ethics Conference and written in or translated into English (for the purposes of judging). 

The winning paper typically is announced and the prize presented at the International Legal Ethics Conference. The author will have their expenses for attending ILEC refunded, and will be given an opportunity to present their paper at ILEC (if they wish). The author of the winning paper is not obliged to attend ILEC.
